AI in Online Courses  (Transcript) 

 

 

Hi- I am Dr Robin Saunders and I am here to discuss the impact of AI on e-learning and m-learning.

The integration of artificial intelligence into online courses is having a transformative impact on education.

 

One of the most significant benefits is personalization at scale. Rather than treating all students the same, AI allows learning platforms to adapt to each individual's needs.

 

For instance, if a student is struggling with a particular concept, an AI tutor can offer extra practice problems or suggest alternative explanations, creating a tailored learning experience and acting almost like a personal teaching assistant.

 

However, the adoption of AI in education also brings important challenges. It is essential to ensure fairness and avoid bias, as AI systems are only as good as the data on which they are trained. If this data reflects existing educational inequalities, those biases could be unintentionally reinforced. Additionally, there is the risk of relying too heavily on technology at the expense of the human connection and mentorship that great educators provide. The goal should be to use AI to enhance—not replace—the role of teachers.

 

Data privacy is another crucial issue, requiring transparency and responsibility in how student information is collected and used.

 

Looking ahead five to ten years, the future of AI in online education is full of possibilities. Beyond personalization, we can expect AI to play increasingly creative and collaborative roles. Imagine students engaging in AI-powered simulations, such as business students running virtual companies or history students conversing with AI-generated historical figures.

 

Educators will also benefit from advanced tools that help them identify trends in student performance and intervene where entire classes struggle. Ultimately, the seamless blend of human instruction and intelligent technology promises to create a more engaging, effective, and accessible learning environment for everyone.
